The 6% Gap to AGI—And The Robots Are Doing Chores
Why an ex-OpenAI insider says we’re nearly at Artificial General Intelligence—and what that really means for your job, your home, and your future.
Hey, it’s Dylan Curious.
I’ve been tracking this AGI stuff for a while now, but I’ll admit it—this week’s update gave me goosebumps. According to Dr. Alan, a former OpenAI safety researcher, we’re now 94% of the way to AGI. The kind of AGI that doesn’t need our help. The kind that lives in your house. Let me explain.
Robots in the Living Room
A new robot called X1 Neo is blowing minds. It’s not just moving—it's helping with gardening, hanging out on the couch, and, yes, scrubbing the dishes. This isn’t Boston Dynamics showing off another backflip. This is a home robot that blends into domestic life. Why is this such a big deal? Because diversity of tasks in a single environment—like your home—is a perfect training ground for general intelligence. It’s the real-life version of boot camp for an AGI.
AGI Isn’t Sci-Fi Anymore
Dr. Alan's countdown is conservative, but it’s now sitting at 94%. His reasoning includes developments like the X1 Neo, OpenAI’s massive advances in language models, and the speed at which these models are starting to reason. Not memorize—reason. And if we hit AGI by 2027, as projected? We’ll have to face everything from AI replacing creative jobs to building other AIs faster than we can regulate them.
A Hug You Can Feel—Digitally
The future of touch is here, too. Skin patches with tiny texture bumps now allow you to feel a virtual object. You could shake hands with someone in the metaverse and actually feel their grip. Think of the implications for gaming, remote work, and even virtual therapy.
Quantum Biology Might Be Smarter Than You
One of the wildest turns came from a research paper in Science. It argues that biological life processes information through quantum effects. That means life—on a molecular level—might already function like a quantum computer. If that’s true, then life on Earth is processing more information than the entire observable universe. Yeah, I needed a drink after reading that too.
Pop Culture Gets a Glitch
Meanwhile, AI art has taken a nostalgic twist. Imagine Tyson playing Punch-Out, or Lara Croft holding a PS1 controller playing Tomb Raider. AI-generated images are turning video game characters into players of their own games, all styled like ’90s Polaroids. It’s weird, eerie, and incredibly cool. The countdown to AGI isn’t a concept anymore. It’s ticking. Are we ready?
